Manufacturing production up 0.3% y/y in Sept

South Africa’s manufacturing production increased by 0.3% year-on-year in September, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) reports.

The largest positive contributions were made by the motor vehicles, parts and accessories and other transport equipment division – 7.6% and contributing 0.5 of a percentage point – and the food and beverages division – 1.8% and contributing 0.5 of a percentage point.

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production decreased by 0.5% in September compared with August. This followed month-on-month changes of 0.7% in August and -0.9% in July.

Stats SA notes that seasonally adjusted manufacturing production increased by 0.1% in the third quarter of this year compared with the second quarter of this year.

Four of the ten manufacturing divisions reported positive growth rates over this period.

The largest positive contributions were reported for the food and beverages division – 1.9% and contributing 0.5 of a percentage point – and the furniture and ‘other’ manufacturing division – 8.4% and contributing 0.3 of a percentage point.

The wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing division was the largest negative contributor – -5.4% and contributing -0.6 of a percentage point.

SALES

Meanwhile, Stats SA reports that seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales was flat in September compared with August. This followed month-on-month changes of 0.7% in August and -0.4% in July.

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales increased by 1.9% in the third quarter of this year compared with the second quarter of this year.

The largest contributions were made by the petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products at 3.4% and contributing 0.7 of a percentage point; motor vehicles, parts and accessories and other transport equipment at 2.5% and contributing 0.4 of a percentage point; and basic iron and steel, nonferrous metal products, metal products and machinery at 1.9% and contributing 0.4 of a percentage point.
